For the past three summers I’ve been attending Sanford Mainers baseball games with my wife and son. I usually buy a ticket or two for several different prizes that are given away at each game. The tickets are only a dollar apiece and the prizes are usually gift certificates at local businesses. In three years, I’d never won a prize.
Finally, Tuesday night, at the last game of the season, they called my number. I’m a winner! For three years I’ve been waiting, and what did I win? A stool.
I’m not putting down the stool, not at all. It’s very well made by someone with a lot of skill. I believe it’s made by somebody local, because they give one away at every game. I like it, as do my wife and son (who has already stood on it several times). I just think I would have gotten more use out of, say, a gift card to House of Pizza. Or Paras Pizza. Or anywhere else that serves pizza.
I do have one small critique, though. On top of the stool is a picture of Humpty Dumpty sitting on a wall. It’s cute and I like it. But I would think that’s the worst possible picture you could have on a stool, because we all know how that story ends – he fell down and broke into so many pieces that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put him back together again.
Is that really what I want going through my head as I’m about to step onto this stool? It doesn’t seem like a good message to be sending. I wonder if I’m the only one to consider this.
I always feel very sad when the Mainers season ends, because it’s such a big part of our summer. Plus, it means that summer’s almost over. But there’s always next year to look forward to. And maybe I’ll even win another prize.
